Pitter Patter - Unneccesary Vocal Commands

Whether in the duck blind or in the upland field, hunting, I always get the comment, “you sure don’t say much to the dog… Why? Shouldn’t you encourage?”

Well, if we have done our homework and are truly ready to be out hunting, not much needs to be said. The work has already been done. The only time I speak to the dog is upon giving them a command or to let them know I appreciate their work.

After years in the field I have learned that incessant talking only teaches the dog to tune you out. If what you are saying isn’t a command with a conditioned response then what you are saying means nothing to them. Limiting your vocalization will result in a dog that is much more responsive dog and attentive. Teach and Train before expecting a conditioned response that isn’t there.
